The Kills, Black Balloon -Emily.

I know 'The kills' is not really a rock band as such but this video resembles some similarities too 'The pretty Reckless' video. After looking at this video i think it wouldn't be impossible to create something of this standard. The whole video has this green/brown wash which seems to be apparent in most rock music video so give a feel of rough/grunge/non-clean cut. The girl in this video is unlike Taylor because she doesn't wear sexual clothing and wear lots of heavy black eye make-up. Even though they are different you can tell that they are aiming at the same type of audience because of the smoking, giving their target audience a invitation to smoke. This way we know they are not aiming at the younger age bracket. This then gives and indication to what genre of music they are. There not pop as that age bracket is vary varied!

The style of this (whilst still stylised) is not as 'clean' dirty as The Pretty Reckless. What I mean by that is 'The Pretty Reckless' will have a stylist with a large wardrobe and wear expensive clothes which are designed to look inexpensive. The Kills have inexpensive clothes (though again a stylist will most likely have been involved.

The male gaze is a huge part of 'The Pretty Reckless', there are countless slow mo's in their video and the camera pans down the leader singer's legs countless times, she adopts the lolita style pose of knees together (see 34-37) so sex is a massive part of their marketing. The video it self is essentially her getting ready for a gig by putting on her makeup and clothes.

The videos are incredibly similar yet miles apart in terms of audience and look. Go to tubemixer and play around with swapping the songs over and see what the effect is of having one video playing over the other song. You could even ask people which song they prefer without letting them know which song belongs to which video.
